Style means the writer’s characteristic manner of expression and what in the end distinguishes one writer from another-so that the experienced reader could identify a passage as coming from, for example a Lawrence novel-is the style. Styles change from age to age, but every novelist has his own ‘voice’. A critical approach that looks closely at style is a productive one, for the style of a novel reveals the author’s attitudes, and from a small section of the text we can infer a great deal about the work as a whole.
Here are several short passages describing characters. The first is from D. H. Lawrence:
In feeling he was developed, sensitive to the atmosphere around him, brutal perhaps, but at the same time delicate, very delicate. So he had a low opinion of himself. (The Rainbow, 1915)
The sentences add one impression after another, rather than presenting a detached analysis. The emphasis is on feelings and emotional characteristics, on the internal psychology of the man. The colloquial, repetitive style aids this impression of getting at the heart of the person. We begin to see the way in which Lawrence concentrates on the emotional side of life, how people are composed of contradictory impulses and desires, and how Lawrence is sympathetic to such a character
